DAY 3
[Read: 1 John 2:15–17]
NIV:
“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”
MSG:
“Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world—wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important—has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from him. The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out—but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.”
[Let's Get into it]
You can’t chase what the world worships and follow Jesus at the same time. One will always pull harder.
This doesn’t mean you have to hate music, movies, fashion, or fun. But it does mean asking: What has my heart? Is your focus on popularity, power, attention, self? Or is your heart aimed at pleasing God and living with forever in mind?
John calls out three traps:
Lust of the flesh — Craving experiences or pleasures more than you crave God.
Lust of the eyes — Wanting what looks good, even if it’s not good for your soul.
Pride of life — Needing to be impressive, important, or “on top.”
And then he drops this truth bomb: All of it’s fading.
So don’t build your identity on stuff that doesn’t last.
[Think About It:]
What part of “the world” has the loudest pull on you right now?
Why is it so easy to want what everyone else seems to have or chase?
[Reflection:]
Are you chasing something that looks good now, but won’t matter later?
What’s one area where you’ve been settling for temporary approval instead of eternal purpose?
[Go Deeper:]
📖 James 4:4 – Friendship with the world means enmity with God.
📖 Romans 12:2 – Don’t conform to the pattern of this world.
📖 Colossians 3:2 – “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
[Action:]
Do a “heart audit.” Pick one day this week to track your attention—what are you watching, listening to, craving, posting, or prioritizing? Ask yourself: Is this forming me into someone more like Jesus—or not?
